Best Vacation Ever – My Muay Thai Retreat in Costa Rica
Wow. On a trip that basically had everything I could ever want on a vacation, where do I even start?
Maybe I’ll start with the absolutely stunning sunsets that I got to observe nearly every night on the pristine Guiones Beach.
Or wait… what about the amazing fresh Costa Rican cuisine I got to eat on a daily basis for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
And I can’t forget about the surf lessons, full body massages, bonfires, jungle hikes and daily dips in the salt water Infinity pool where monkey were swinging in the trees right nearby.
Oh wait! I forgot about the most important part of the Muay Thai retreat… The people.
Without Sam, Aileen, Safi, Wes, Liz, Nat, David, and Edie, this trip to paradise wouldn’t have been nearly as fun, exciting and enlightening as it was. They truly were to best part of the trip and it was extremely difficult saying goodbye at the dinner table on the last night. That being said, I’m SO happy to have met and train Muay Thai with these amazing, passionate people. I’m sure we’ll run into each other again at some point in the future.
I know what you’re thinking… what about the Muay Thai training? Don’t worry, there was plenty of that.
Muay Thai Training
We trained twice a day nearly every day mixing in partner drills, pad work, shadowboxing exercises, technical sparring, full-body conditioning, explosive plyometrics, ab circuits, yoga, meditation and basically every type of training you can think of.
And I don’t want to forget to mention our training session on the beach while the sun was setting… shit was epic!
Some Simple Partner Drills
But the best part of the training was that we all learned from one another and we all pushed each other to have purposeful, intense training sessions… and I believe we succeeded in that.
Okay, sorry for getting all mushy but the trip was a true success because of the people who attended. Want to hear about everything else we got to do during our stay at Jungles Edge? Well whether you do or not, I’m going to tell you:
Holy fuck I forgot how much fun surfing was! Back in my teenage years I used to surf on rare occasions with my pops on the East Coast and it was so much fun… but very difficult.
This time around we got to take a surf lesson from a professional Costa Rican surfer, Jungle Frank, and the small tips he shared with us made a huge difference in my ability to catch a wave.
The entire group set out into the ocean to try and surf. I believe every single one of us caught at least a couple waves… but we obviously had our fair share of wipeouts too – which were hilarious.
Man… I can’t even begin to explain to you how amazing this night was.
We started off by unloading pieces of wood from Dave’s (the owner of Jungle’s Edge) truck and placing it in a pit on the beach. After starting the bonfire we all settled in comfortably and literally had the beach all to ourselves.
Our Muay Thai group joined forces with a few ladies who were also at The Jungles Edge celebrating one of their birthdays. Having them with us made the night even better. It was so cool getting to meet and talk with the girls since they were from other parts of the world (Europe and South Africa). Plus, without the ingenuity of our friend Nat and the girls, we would’ve never been able to create a wooden tripod to take this group picture!
And I can’t even begin to explain how the stars in the night sky looked. They were the most bright and visible as I’ve ever seen them. You could literally see thousands of stars including the outline of the Milky Way and a number of constellations. It was unreal!
Taking an afternoon off to hike through the jungles of Costa Rica was a great experience. Although we were in the dry season so the waterfalls weren’t as spectacular as they usually are, it was still nice foraging through the rivers, rocks and trees to explore the nature that Costa Rica has to offer.
About half way through the hike we found a resting place to sit down, chill and eat some fresh watermelons that our guide, Jungle Frank, brought along for the trip. It was so peaceful sitting in the middle of the jungle and listening to the nature around us.
R&R By The Infinity Pool
Resting and relaxing is something I’m really good at, so when I had the opportunity to lounge out by the salt water pool that overlooked the tropical jungle I was all over it.
Jumping in the pool was so refreshing after sweating balls during the morning training sessions. It was also a great time to catch up on some reading and writing without any stress or worry about having to be anywhere.
The time relaxing by thepool was the perfect time to reflect on life and try to organize the millions of thoughts running through my mind.
Oh yea and you know the coolest thing about hanging out by the pool? There were literally about a dozen monkeys chillen in the canopy right by us. Although they were cute little dudes, their howls sounded like demon spawns from hell… but they were still cute as fuck.
Delicious, Healthy & Fresh Costa Rican Food
I’m a food fanatic, however, I don’t really enjoy cooking food because I tend to suck at it. Fortunately during the entire Muay Thai retreat, the chefs prepared the most mouthwatering buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was hard not to eat everything in sight… and that’s probably why I did eat everything in sight.
Besides the food we were also served fresh squeezed smoothies and vegetable juices that supplied us with the nutrition we needed to train twice a day. Drinking these smoothies and juices on a regular basis really helped keep me energized and feeling refreshed.
And the best thing about it all is that literally every single meal there was something different. The variety of foods was unreal and it was so amazing being able to try all different types of the local Costa Rican cuisine. I miss it so much…
Want to have an amazing experience like this one?
This was truly the best vacation I’ve ever been on. And I don’t want to speak for the rest of the group members, but I’m confident that they had a great time improving their Muay Thai and experiencing everything that Costa Rica and The Jungles Edge had to offer.
Almost immediately when I got back home to the NY weather, I decided that I have to do this again… so I am!
I have set dates aside for 2 future Muay Thai retreats at the Jungle’s Edge in Costa Rica:
- March 20th – March 27th, 2016

You’ve got plenty of time to figure out whether you want to come to a Muay Thai retreat in Costa Rica with me… but with that being said there are a limited amount of spaces available for each retreat, so you won’t want to wait too long. Shoot me a message here and feel free to ask my any questions.
I can not wait to go back. I really hope you’re able come and be a part of one of these amazing Muay Thai retreats in Costa Rica!
